From last few days, I have been hearing about the "lost love" out of the marriage between the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government and the Left front! It has always been evident that the only reason for the Congress led UPA and the Left front to come together was to keep the Bhartia Janta Party (BJP) led National Democratic Front (NDA) out of power. The History of Indian Politics has innumerable instance of ideological cleavage that has always existed between the Congress and Left front. What is disappointing is that the way Left has taken U-turn in this whole issue. Few days back, Left was portraying itself as a responsible ally by stating that there was no question of withdrawing support from the UPA Government as the creases of ideologies can be ironed out by bilateral talks between the UPA and the left front. But, on Saturday after the meeting of the Politburo, headed by one of the main Hard Liners of the Left Front Prakash Karat, the Left gave the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi an ultimatum to halt the ongoing negotiations of the Indo-US Nuclear Deal or face the “Consequences”. The whole country including the UPA Government was stunned. Sources say that the West Bengal based leaders are not keen on such a strong stand to the extent of withdrawing support; but it is the hard liners from the State of Kerla who want to stop this agreement at all cost. The talks of a Mid-way formula are the talk of the town at the moment. It seems that the UPA Government, specially the Prime Minister Shri. Manmohan Singh is not ready to buckle under pressure as it is the question of his own reputation as the leader, internationally and in his own country. Any stepping back will be an embarrassing moment for the Government and the whole country internationally.
What is most disappointing is that the opposition by left will deny the nation a well deserved and well-persevered a civil nuclear agreement apart from destabilizing the government. With this agreement, India will be recognized as the responsible nuclear power amongst all the member countries and this will further reinforce India’s geopolitical position internationally. Being enthroned as a responsible nuclear power, India will take a huge leap in becoming one of the world’s superpower. Is this deal that bad that the left wants to endanger the existence of the Central Government? Or is this left’s struggle to save its own identity? The Left has always opposed the Imperialistic Policies of United States and that is one reason that the left is compelled to oppose this reason come what may! The same was again demonstrated by Left front’s nation wide protest of the visit of President Bush in India last year for no reason!
It will be pertinent to have the historical perspective of Left’s foreign policies. A serious rift within the party surfaced in 1962. One reason was the Sino-Indian War, where a faction of the Indian communists backed the position of the Indian government, while other sections of the party claimed that it was a conflict between a socialist and a capitalist state, and thus took a pro-Chinese position. There were three factions in the party - internationalists, centrists, and nationalists. Internationalists supported the Chinese stand where as the Nationalists backed India. Centrists took a neutral view. Prominent leaders including S.A. Danke, A. K. Gopalan, and E. M. S. Namboodiripad were in the nationalist faction. B. T. Ranadive, Sundarayya, P. C. Joshi, Basavapunniah, Jyoti Basu, and Harkishan Singh Surjeet are among those supported China. Ajoy Ghosh was the prominent person in the centrist faction. In general, most of Bangal communist leaders supported China and most others supported India. Hundreds of CPI leaders, accused of being pro-Chinese were imprisoned. Some of the nationalists were also imprisoned, as they used to express their opinion only in party forums, and CPI's official stand was pro-China.
The camaraderie of the Left front and China is well known and is no longer amusing and the aforementioned historical perspective enunciates the same. Some of the Left front’s leaders were shamelessly resonating with the opinion China’s Ambassador in India last December about the border dispute between the India and China and especially about the dispute with respect to geopolitical situation of Sikkim, which according to him is part of sovereign China and its refusal to issue visas to residents of Arunachal Pradesh (thereby implying that they are Chinese nationals). It is not hidden that China is not really keen upon this Indo-nuclear deal and Left’s vehement opposition when India is all set to begin its negotiations with The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is not a coincidence. Are the leaders of Left Front the true nationalist as they themselves proclaim?
Few months back, Vir Sanghvi actually called the CPI(M) as ‘thugs and murderers’ for the massacre of innocents in Nandigram and in fact he went on to draw parallels with Mao and Stalin and the finest traditions of ‘global communism’. The comrades are all in support of acquisition and industrialization in West Bengal but they have shamelessly opposed the liberal economic policies of UPA government. Is it justified? Is it justified on part of Left front to create impediments in path of India, the impregnated Superpower?
Be reasonable Comrades! Let’s make India, the Super Power and not try to please your Chinese counterparts! It’s better to be a true “nationalist” than to be a true “communist”! where is the loyalty? The left is not right this time!!!
